Back to the simple life part 2

So in my previous post I spoke about my wifes unhappiness about living in such a small village because she is a city girl at heart, as it turns out my assumption as to why she was unhappy wasnt entirely accurate.

Her biggest issue is the simple fact that there are no grocery stores here and no entertainment either other than the bar, her point being is that you have to drive for 30 minutes to the nearest city to get groceries or to have a family night/day out or to do pretty much anything, which as she says isnt so bad during the summer, but is not a good or safe thing in the winter as the roads are often closed for days at a time.

She actually does enjoy the country life, its just the severe lack of everything out here that makes her not so keen on living out here, having to drive 30 minutes (often in snowstorms and blizzards)down an icy highway to get to work and back is not a pleasant experience for her (or anyone really).

The thing is Pense is a bedroom community, people live here and work elsewhere, there really is next to nothing here, yet when we went to Maryfield (my home town) , it to is a small village but it has a proper grocery store,a small restaurant,a movie theater, and a pool hall/bar/hotel, it also has a school that goes all the way to grade 12 ,unlike here where the school only goes to grade 8.
Maryfield also has a spring and fall fair, and a mid summer antique farm show that draws farmers and visitors for miles around, they have a library, fitness center,2 retirement homes,a gas station, hardware store and a few little family shops that sell crafts and such, and Maryfield retains its young people, meaning most kids who grow up there end up returning later in life to raise their families.

My wifes point is she would like to live there as there are things to do there, there are even job opportunities there, unlike here in Pense that has non of that. Her major sticking point is the fact if we moved to Maryfield we wouldnt have to travel so much, especially in winter.

She makes a good argument, I am home sick for my hometown, most of my pleasant childhood memories are of there in Maryfield, the problem is , it will take me another 7.5 years to pay off the property we have here in Pense, even if I were to sell now, we wouldnt have much money in pocket to start over as most would go to the bank to pay off the loan.

Theres that and the other fact, we have alot of shit!, a camper, a pair of off road bikes, 3 vehicles, I have a 30x30 work shop full of tools, then theres the contents of a 3 bedroom house and a utility trailer, the tractor the lawn tractor, the tillers etc. Sure I could sell most of it off and start over, but the chances of getting the money invested in these things back are slim.

Even our son says hes up for a move and wouldnt mind starting over in Maryfield, my little family planted the seeds of change in my head, made some valid arguments for leaving here to move to Maryfield, tugged on my emotional heart strings, and made me thankful that they didnt say they wanted to move to a city..... hard to resist their desires, and so I am giving it serious thought.

So thats where we are at, I will keep you posted on this, and yall will be the first to know if I decide to say screw it and move my family down to Maryfield, after all, if you have learned anything about me through these blogs, you know that I am all about Family and keeping them happy at any cost.

A typical day in the Life of Butch …

I speak often with great fondness about the little village I live in , I talk about how peaceful it is, how friendly and supportive it is, a great place to live…and it’s all that and oh so much more, it’s like a little slice of a Utopian oasis hidden out in the middle of nowhere Saskatchewan, it is *My* Utopia , it’s not for everyone, and that fact comes painfully clear come spring… see what I didn’t say about my village is , every spring we are up to our asses in mud…. there is only 1 paved road here, Mainstreet , all other streets and driveways are made of clay base and gravel … if I had to describe this place in 1 sentence to a visitor in spring this is what I’d say…. we have a church, school, arena, general store, bar/hotel…and we have Mud… Lord do we ever have Mud!! … that about sums up my village.

Now every spring my backyard floods , I am talking you can hop in my canoe and paddle around the yard flood (seriously ) so I was up at 7:30 am this morning, in my pajamas and rubbers (rain boots for those that don’t speak Canadian) standing in 2 feet of water setting up both water pumps (I borrowed a second pump from my neighbour) in hindsight perhaps I should have had a couple cups of coffee to wake up and clear my brain before setting up the pumps… Because…. Like a dumb ass that I can be , the pumps are electric , so I am standing in 2 feet of water with 2 plugged in and very live extension cords squeezed between my thighs as I primed the pumps , holding a metal 2 gallon pail.

I couldn’t put the power cords down in the water or …. well I would have killed every frog within a 150 foot radius and taken myself out in the process , remember I’d only been awake for about 10 minutes, no coffee and not thinking, so what to do, the pumps are now running , I fill the bucket with water so it won’t float away and gingerly balance the power cords on it and wade back to the house …. ( I’m not the sharpest tack in the box when I first wake up) I later went out and replaced the bucket with a couple sawhorses and tacked a nail on either side of the power cords so they don’t slip off into the water.

I cleaned up had coffee and Hammy and I went to church, after church I got talking with a friend who invited Hammy and I to go spend some time with him and his family at his cabin in Manitou Beach! … aside from a mini summer vacation (which Hammy and I need) and spending time with a good friend, Manitou Beach is one of only 3 salt water lakes on earth… of course everyone knows of the big one …The Dead Sea ( bet you didn’t know it is not a sea at all, it is a lake) … the second is in Czechoslovakia, and the third is right here in Saskatchewan Canada (Manitou lake) it’s the only saltwater lake in North America , so that’s really awesomely cool!

After church it was back home, feed the kidlet, do the dishes, get the laundry started and then out to change the tires on the Mighty Cavalier , I finally got that lug nut off, actually my neighbour came over with a couple tools and we broke the stupid aluminum cap off the actual lug nut ( why they put those on beats the hell out of me) once we got that cap off ( it was rounded so the tire iron couldn’t get a grip on it) , with a couple curse words and some heavy prying with the tire iron we got the lug nut off, after that escapade my neighbour went home and I jacked up the car and changed the dang tire ( only took a month to get it done) , about that time my dang back went out ( I’m getting old) I quickly decided that the other tire could wait til tomorrow , I’ve gone 1 month without a vehicle, 1 more day won’t kill me.

then it was in to make supper for the kidlet ( with a back that is killing me slowly) , shower and now I’m back in my pajamas just relaxing.

This is a typical day for me, toss in work and my life couldn’t get anymore exciting lol , it’s country living, time means nothing out here, things get done on their own good time, life is slow and quiet here, not fast paced and noisy like the cities, where you gonna go out here? north field or south field? for a change of pace I take the dog for a walk down the grid roads (gravel roads) we go a couple miles then turn around and wander home again, to me this is about as close to Heaven as I can get while living.

Well that’s all I got for tonight folks, so Remember:express your love often, never take tomorrow for granted, and be kind to others.

Last Rant of sorts of 2013

First off I hope Everyone had a good Christmas and that Everyone has an awesome new year!
That said, up here in Canukistan (Canada)there is a guy in Saskatoon Saskatchewan who took that city to court over the fact that the city put "Merry Christmas" on its buses during the holidays, he lost his case and now has taken it to the Human Rights Commission.... What an ASSHOLE!! , look heres my beef, This is Canada, traditionally the holiday greeting has always been Merry Christmas, regardless of religious beliefs, race, color creed, ethnic back ground, it always has been Merry Christmas. What is so insulting about that? hell even if you are an Atheist wishing someone or being wished a Merry Christmas will not hurt maim disfigure scar or kill you!! use some common sense! and most of all get the f^ck over it!

This political correctness bullsh^t has got to STOP!, Canada is a welcome refuge for immigrants often fleeing political strife or war or persecution for their religious beliefs and yes I am proud of the fact we open our doors to those that need to move here, I am all for diversity, but here is the rub... you move to Canada, you adopt our customs you follow our laws and you salute our Flag, remember you are a guest in our country, you dont like it then f^cking LEAVE! you left your own home country for a reason! dont come here then try to make this country a duplicate of your own! again, you are free to leave if you dont like Canada.

We have a whole generation of politically correct jar heads coming up behind my generation who are afraid to call a spade a spade (its a type of shovel so relax)they are afraid to offend anyone especially those new to our great country, I however have deprogrammed our 12 year old son from the crap he learns about being politically correct in school and have taught him not to offend anyone but not to say Happy Holidays either , its Merry Christmas! and that is that.

Another thing that really irks me is the fact that the Aboriginals in this country still cry foul and blame their rampant substance abuse problems on the white people... look I agree that the Europeans dealt your ancestors a very shitty deal, yes they took your land, yes they tried to pull a genocide on your peoples.... but that was hundreds of years ago!, they didnt kill all of you off because you are here now, your people are NOT extinct nor at risk of becoming extinct! This is the present, how am I a 46 year old white person to blame for your substance abuse? you drink excessively because of what was done centuries ago? hell in that case let me join you because centuries ago some of my family were burned at the stake after being accused of witchcraft, some were killed in various invasions, some died from the plague, some were killed in various wars... I should be a substance abuser because of my history too, btw half my family was wiped out by natives back in the colonial days! pretty lame excuse for substance abuse! and I still fail to see how exactly I am responsible for your troubles, please explain exactly how it is still my fault? god forbid I am racist for asking or daring to question aboriginals.

I still believe we have taken this political correctness too far when people get accused of racism for stating the obvious or for questioning anyone not of their race, and when people can take others to court because a simple well wish such as Merry Christmas offends them and they feel like their rights not to believe in what Christmas stands for in the true sense have been abused.

Common sense goes a long way folks.

Happy new year

One of my Passions… Gardening

I will provide photos of various gardens in a later post, and of course of my own gardens , this Blog is sort of a spur of the moment entry.

So one of my passions is gardening, both flowers and vegetables, I am lucky enough to have a property that supports multiple gardens and have a lot of free space for lawns and trees, I realize not everyone has that much space to play with, but no matter how big or small your space is ,there is always room for a garden.

My main vegetable garden is roughly 12 feet wide by ohhh I’d guess around 50 feet long, it’s your standard in ground garden, I simply rotor tilled my plot into the ground without much thought or precise mapping, I tilled the grass under and let the sun burn the roots, still I do have to weed and pull some grass out throughout the summer, but as each year passes the grass gets less and less, I confess ….the weeds are the bane of my existence, no matter how many I pull (root and all) there always seems to be 10 more the following week, I’ve been at war with the weeds for 6 years now.

Next year I will remedy my weed issues by spraying the entire empty garden with commercial grade round up, let that settle in about a week, then back fill the garden with clean black top soil, about 4 yards worth of fresh dirt, then plant my vegetable garden.

I also have a small flower garden under the bay window of our house out front, where I usually plant flowers , but this year I decided to change things up, since my main garden is doing poorly this year due to weeds and flooding, the only things that survived the flood is the corn and onions , so Back to the flower garden, this year I back filled it with fresh top soil (12 fully loaded wheel barrows full of dirt) I bricked off the ornamental grass to keep it from spreading, and planted beets, carrots, cucumbers and squash in the flower garden, I also planted about a dozen giant sunflowers there, 6 I will harvest for the seeds (should get about 5 pounds) which will give me something to munch on through the winter, the other 6 I will leave for the winter birds.

By the back step, my wife has an old toy box that she had filled with dirt last year and grew flowers, this year I planted 6 tomato plants there instead, we also have 4 really large planter boxes along our front yard fence, usually we fill them with flowers, this year I put petunias in them along with a couple tomato plants.

I have been collecting hanging flower pots from yard sales, next year I will plant things like lettuce and cabbage in them, 1 head per pot, I have discovered container gardening is far less work than my main in ground garden, less weeds for 1, less water also.

Which brings me to small space gardening, pretty much anything that holds dirt can be used for gardening, plastic pop bottles, buckets, lengths of eves trough , wooden boxes, burlap bags, wicker baskets, the possibilities are endless, if you live in an apartment and have a balcony or even a window sill you can grow a small vegetable or herb garden.

If you live in a house, either rent or own, you can either do an in ground garden and do battle with weeds and grass or there is an alternative, you can build boxes and do a raised box garden, this eliminates the grass and most weeds, when I back fill my garden next year I just may go this route. You can also container garden as well.

Garden (for me) gives me a distraction and relieves stress , in the end the work I put into it pays off big time, come harvest my grocery bill drops to almost zero, the extra money saved I either bank or use for meat to fill the freezer ( I also hunt to fill the freezer), with the exception of this year (due to flooding) I usually average around a 500 pounds of vegetables yield, some can be frozen some pickled some canned , there’s nothing quite like garden fresh vegetables.

Another benefit of gardening is, all plants take in carbon and pollution’s, even the lowly lawn grass and they release oxygen,so when you plant vegetables, not only do they benefit you in health and financially, they also give you oxygen, flowers and flowering vegetables attract bumble bees which take the pollen and make honey, so you are also helping the bees as well. You can compost the parts of the plant you don’t eat easily simply by chopping it up and putting it back on the soil of your containers or garden plot, they will rot and fill the soil with nutrients ( you can plow dead leaves under too)

So I will leave it at that and go outside and start taking some photos , as well as going to some of my favorite gardening sites and linking them up for gardening ideas tips and tricks.

Remember folks, express your love often, never take tomorrow for granted, and be kind to others

There is something absolutely enchanting about a glass of good wine. And what better way to showcase excellent wines than by keeping them that would give justice to its sublimity.

For example, you may want to store wine glasses in it too. This is especially the case if you want it as an add-on to your bar. The simple side of life

Happy Independence Day to everyone in the USA !! God Bless you,may you once again become a world leader and champion of all that is Right and Just.

Canada Day was July 1st, being that we live out in the countryside I purchased and fired off fireworks, of course they werent as good as the professional fireworks in the cities, but hey, they were pretty and there were no major mishaps, fires or unwanted mayhem.

Today was a day of getting back to basics, remembering where we were and where we are now, today was a day to get back to the simple country living that we have come to enjoy for the past 6 odd years or so.
Keep in mind that my Wife is a city gal, born and raised in Calgary Alberta, she has lived in the big city for 32 years of her life, try to picture the culture shock and general shock of leaving a big noisy fast paced city of 1.2 million people and moving to the outskirts of a small village with less than 500 people, where the only noise is cows mooing or coyotes howling! there is a small bar here, always dead except for friday nights when all the rowdy young farm boys come to town to drink gamble and swap stories about who has the biggest baddest truck in these here parts, the village also has a gas station which doubles as the local liquor store, convenience store, and greyhound bus stop ( though the bus rarely stops here), there is also a post office( mail arrives around 10:30am and gets sorted sometime before 4pm (closing time), there is an Anglican church,a hockey rink with a small curling rink attached, and a school that goes from kinder-garden to grade 8 (the kids have to bus it to the city to attend high school) and thats about it.

My wife misses the city life, she misses the transit system, she misses the large crowds and multiple shopping stores and malls, and after 6 years out here in the country she is still blind to all the beauty and freedom and safety that comes with living out here, I know if I ever hit the lottery or sold our property she would demand to move back to the stinking crime ridden big city.

I am hurt, wounded, and now uncertain of my future, our sons future, I am saddened by the fact that we live in an almost paradise and my wife is blind to it and doesnt want to be here at all, yes the winters here in Saskatchewan are brutal, minus 40 degrees and over 6 feet of snow are the normal here in winter, and they are long winters too, 6 months straight, last winter it was 7 months straight! even I get fed up with the winters, but I always stop and think we usually get 6 months of hot summer too so it balances out.

Overall it is like a personal utopia here that Ive spent 6 years building for my wife and son, you wont see deer or moose in your yard in the middle of the city, you dont hear the coyotes sing their lonesome songs, nor hear the bull frogs and crickets, you cant tame down a raccoon in the city and have your morning coffee out on the deck wearing nothing but a tee shirt and boxers without a neighbor bitching, in the city you can only have as many hobbies/toys as your garage or parking space will allow, here in the country we have all kinds of toys, a camper, 3 vehicles, a pair of off road bikes a snowmobile etc, good luck using half that crap in the city never mind trying to park it all, here you can walk for miles and breathe fresh flower scented air, the folks are friendly and actually stop and talk to you, try leaving your car, garage and house unlocked over night or while your out in the city, cant do it or youd be robbed blind, here you can and we often do as do most others in the village.

Here in the country you can sit out and watch the stars and actually see them, all of them, cant do that in the city, the bright lights blind the stars, thunder storms are awesome out here in the country, scary and invigorating at the same time, most of the storms are lost in the cities, hard to watch the lightening show when theres a hundred story skyscraper blocking your view.

here our kid is free to roam where ever he pleases, everyone knows him and if he gets into mischief ,we know about it before he gets home and can deal with it, cant let your kid have that kind of freedom in the city, no shootings stabbings robbery in the country, all that and more in the city.

Im hurt because we have worked hard to get ourselves out here so our son could be free and so we could get away from the crime found in the cities, I dont wish to give what we have up just to have multiple shopping options, we can drive to the city for a day of shopping without having to actually live there.

I am pretty sure I would whither up and eventually die of a broken heart if I had to move back to a city, our son feels the same, yet my wife doesnt seem to care, she wants the city and is not happy here at all, I am caught between a rock and a hard place, and hope that her and I can resolve this, the negativity is killing me.

guess thats all for now

here comes a rough day of celebrations…

I usually don’t post this early in the day, but this has been weighing heavy on my mind the last couple days, Mother’s Day is fast approaching, and it’s going to be a rough day for my little Hammy :( he is already feeling it as the school is gearing up for that special day with arts and crafts classes devoted to making all the Mom’s tacky cards and artwork, he comes home “off” not upset, but sad, he is missing his Mom pretty bad right now, like me he is happy for his friends who get to make cards and art to give to their Mom’s , he feels like the outcast right now, and it is socially awkward for his friends too, to be excited for Mothers Day around him. He just smiles and tells them it’s okay, be Happy that you have a Mom to love and give cards and presents too, while inside a piece of him is dying.

It is absolutely killing me to know that my boy is hurting so much, he tries to be brave, he tries to keep his smile and be happy around me as he knows I am still hurting bad as well, I hear him at night in his room crying quietly and my heart is breaking for him.

I have arranged for Hammy to attend a Bereavement Camp this coming weekend so he can be around other kids and teens who have lost one or both of their parents, so Hammy will know he is not alone in his loss, and he will have peers around him who get it, who know what he is going through, who understand what it’s like to lose a parent. it is my gift to him.

it will be rough on me as well, we always made such a big event of Mothers Day, Hammy and I would try to grant her every wish, we would have her do as she pleased while we cooked and cleaned and did her bidding, there was cake, always a black forest cake, her favorite, a big hearty meal was always made for her, and we gave her gifts, cards and flowers, we constantly reminded her that we Loved her and appreciated everything she done for us, and told her stories of our choicest favorite Mommy moments that we witnessed her have, I always thanked her for letting me be a parent, to Hammy and I she was the worlds greatest Mother, because of her just being who she was and such a kind hearted loving person, we strive’d everyday to be our absolute best for her, to be a family that she was proud of, to be the family she wanted.

Now… there is no celebrations, no cakes, no big meal, no gifts, no more stories, just a dinner for 2 with a table set for 3 , her seat sits empty now, there is always a plate set for her now, and on that plate sits a purple candle and 2 roses, 1 red rose from me, and 1 white rose from Hammy, the candle gets lit in Remembrance of her , to let her know that we still deeply Love her, to let her know that she is so desperately Missed, to let her know that we will Never forget her, to let her know she had such a great impact and influence in our lives , we are forever grateful to her.

This weekend I will be alone while Hammy is at the camp, I need alone time, just to decompress and be alone with my thoughts, to brace myself for Sunday and Mother’s Day, I will be doing a lot of talking to my God , it may sound silly to some to believe in an invisible being in the sky, but my faith comforts me, and I really NEED to believe that there is a Heaven, and I really NEED to believe my wife lives on there, and I NEED to believe and have Faith that one day her and I will be together again , it makes living much more bearable, and makes the pain and heartache I feel just a little bit more tolerable.

Guess that’s all I have to say for now, So Remember Folks:express your love often, never take tomorrow for granted, and be kind to others.

Complete Guide of Chickadee Bird House Plans!

Finding the Right Chickadee Bird House Plans

A simple project for bird lovers that they can put in their backyard to enjoy bird watching is a bird house. Frequently, home owners will construct two houses to attract chickadee bird to their yard. You can find chickadee bird house plans at various bird society and nature websites. Looking all great ideas for Bird House Plans!

Step by step instructions are generally included in plans outlining the process of building a specific type. Some birds will actually use another birds nest as a home, so these types of birds could really use a home of their own. Chickadee birds are one such species, and because of suburban community development their population has continued to decline since they are having a much more difficult time finding a home.

Materials for Make Chickadee Bird House Plans

Because each species has its own needs and requirements for living, many chickadee bird house plans will be specifically designed for that species only. Plans for two different species could overlap a bit, meaning you might be able to use a plan designed for several species of small birds, while also being able to use a plan designed for several species of larger birds.

===> The Lazy Mans Way to Build Chickadee Bird House Plans!

Cedar is an excellent wood to use for because it naturally repels insects. This will result in birds finding the house more attractive since they know insects will not be a disturbance.

Chickadee Bird House Plans about Placement

Other instructions included in a plan could include how to attach or place one on the top of a pole or post. This chickadee bird house plans is designed to make it difficult for predators to gain access a birds home. Some of the predators include raccoons, squirrels, and cats. They will often climb a tree to get into the bird house, where they will proceed to eat the eggs that are inside.

However, when it is placed on top of a pole, predators a much less likely to be able to get to the eggs or young birds. The chickadee bird house plans will indicate how high it should be mounted, so predators can not get in while the owner can still view it in order to see the nest developing.

Chickadee bird house plans might also include the ability to open the front of the house to view the nestlings and the nesting process from beginning to end. The front of some houses are able to open on a hinge while having a clear plastic interior to leave the nest undisturbed but still allowing people to see inside.

A Glimpse of My Wife

My wife was such a beautiful person in life, she loved people, all people, she was so warm and loving towards every person she met and if you befriended her, she would genuinely love you.

She always wrote and sent everyone cards and letters, she kept track of everyone’s birthdays and other special days and would send off cards and little trinkets just to let them know that she was thinking of them.

My wife had no use for the finer things in life ( big house new shiny cars etc) , she enjoyed the simple things in life and preferred that we always lived within our means, she would rather spend her days going for walks, a bike ride, or a drive down the many backroads here than in a shopping mall, she always preferred a backyard bonfire with friends and family over the hustle and bustle of the city.

She was “old fashioned” by today’s standards, ironically she had the same morals and values found on old tv shows such as The Walton’s or Little House on the Prairies, if you ever want to know what our lives were like and how our son was raised… just watch either show, it will give you a pretty accurate picture of our small family, my wife was modest too, she always was careful not to show too much skin unless we were at a pool or at the lake, then she wore a one piece swimsuit as she was always worried that a bikini would slip or worse come undone lol .

My wife wasn’t one for foul language, she didn’t like it and would admonish me whenever I swore, unless I was hurt ( usually self inflicted) , then she would tolerate the string of profanities that spewed forth from me, but there was 2 words that could never be spoken in her presence, and she would slap anyone or tell them off if they dared say them… 1 was Mother Trucker (take the Tr out and replace it with an F ) and 2 the dreaded “C” word C*nt … may God have mercy on you if you had dared utter these 2 words in her presence, because she showed no mercy with her reaction, she’s slap the lips clean off your face if you dared.

I used to be a foul mouthed jackass before I met her, but by the end of the first year with her, she had me trained pretty well and I rarely swore, think that’s a laugh riot, she single handedly trained all my friends and co workers as well!!

My wife carried herself with a sense of pride and grace, never arrogance, she was just very sure of herself and she shared that with everyone, she was always the first to offer encouragement, always the first to help you succeed at whatever it was you were doing, always the first to praise your accomplishments, and to pick you up and dust you off when you failed, she would never let you give up, if you failed , she would encourage you to try again and again until you succeeded, pretty soon everyone and everyone she always did this with were striving for their own personal best and success, to show her they could do it, to make her proud, and by God she was so very proud of everyone that she had helped and encouraged , and she showed it by hosting a grand party for them to celebrate their accomplishments , it was usually a backyard BBQ and bonfire (no alcohol ) , she would bake fresh biscuits and breads cakes and pies, she was famous for her potato salad and cabbage buns ( hamburger, onions, and cabbage, baked into a bun) , she would buy the person(s) individual small gifts, a token of her love and her sense of joy over their accomplishments.

My wife was very Genuine,Honest,Loyal and “Authentic” to coin a phrase. she loved life and all who were in it, her greatest love was children, she spent 17 years working as an ECE (Early Childhood Educator) , the children loved her, she had the ability to get right down to their level, be they babies, 5yrs,10yrs, etc she had a way with children that took everyone by surprise, at the end of the day when it was time for the children to go home, they would actually cry and throw temper tantrums because they did not want to be separated from her, even though they would see her again the next day, there was just something about her that made children gravitate to her , hell she had that effect on everyone and animals.

People and animals just naturally wanted to be around her, I never wanted to leave her side, and that made the hours spent away at work, the longest most agonizing hours ever, I couldn’t wait to get back home to her, when we went for our walks down the backroads , the wild animals (foxes, coyotes, deer, pronghorn antelopes, moose etc) would be within 50 feet of us and they seemed to be watching her without fear, they’d just watch as we watched back, it truly was amazing , she always tried to talk me out of hunting season, the funny thing is , we could go for a walk and see 5 10 20+ deer on any given day, yet when I went out to shoot one…. not a deer to be found for a 50 mile radius! I always used to tease her and tell her that a few days before hunting season she must be sneaking off into the fields while I’m away at work telling the animals I wanted to shoot them and that they should run and hide for the next 2 weeks! … without fail , every deer season my friends and I would have to drive to another spot in Saskatchewan to go hunting, and as soon as the season was over… our village was once again overrun with deer…. I still haven’t truly figured that out. … it has happened every year for the last 7 years… mighty strange indeed.

I don’t truly know how to describe what a wonderful person my wife was, you pretty much had to meet her to fully understand how amazing of a person she was, she kept her faith in God and never wavered, she never forced religion or her beliefs on anyone, her only insistence was saying grace before each meal, it didn’t matter what your personal beliefs were, you bowed your head and stayed silent while she said Grace. we have some friends who are Atheist , and she respected them and their thoughts and would listen with interest while they expressed their views , they would expect some sort of argument from her, but she would give none, she would simply state the obvious… guess you will find out either way when you die and leave it at that.

My wife taught me what it means to truly love and be loved unconditionally, she taught me how to trust, not just others but myself, she taught me self confidence, she taught me how to parent with a loving heart and a gentle hand, she taught me how to remain calm no matter the circumstance or situation, I have learned more about life and love in the 18 years that I was blessed to be with her, than I have in my entire life on this earth! and that is a fact you can take to the bank.

She was very selfless, always putting others before herself, sometimes I’d give her a bit of hell telling her that she deserved to put herself first, she should treat herself to whatever she wanted, she should do what pleases her and to hell with everyone else, she never listened, she never once put herself first before anyone else, if she did buy herself anything she would be wracked with guilt and either return it or give it away, she would go without to make sure others had what they needed/wanted, all the while she WAS doing exactly what pleased her most, and that was helping and giving to others, that is what made her happy.

This is but a small glimpse of what my wife was like as a person, a small fraction of who she was, words can not describe her with 100% accuracy as hard as I try, the words fail me, to me she was a true Angel in the flesh, perhaps she really was an Angel, all I know is out of the 7+Billion people on this planet…… she chose ME… I am truly humbled by that, I do not possess rockstar good looks, nor do I possess millions of dollars, but she chose me, someone who was a complete and utter asshole before I met her, complete with a lengthy criminal record… yet she chose me, looked beyond all my faults, paid no mind to my previous life, and slowly took me apart bit by bit and reshaped me and helped me grow into the person I am today, for that I am eternally grateful, I strongly dislike the person I once was, but often think about it, one of her favorite sayings was : always look forward, never back, and never forget who you were and where you came from lest you return.

I never understood that when I was a bit younger, but now it is as clear as day to me, so every once in awhile I stop and reflect on my past, reflect on where I am now, and look to the future to see where I could be if I just keep on doing what I am doing now. I will never forget who I was and where I came from before I met her, and I know that I shall never return to that place either, my personal history shall not repeat itself.

So I am going to stop here, I am feeling both happy talking about her, yet at the same time I grieve for my loss of her, see my life was so clearly mapped out and I was so sure of myself when she was at my side, I could not fail, now I am not so sure, my grief is much more and much deeper than the loss of her, my grief is also because for 18 wonderful years, I have lived and walked in Heaven with her, only I was too blind to see that, now that I realise that, it’s too late, I grieve because I will never know such love, peace and happiness again. I took that for granted, and believed in tomorrows , now I’ve lost it all and now know that tomorrows may never come, and love in its purest form is a double edged sword that can wound your very soul and take you from Heaven down to hell in the the blink of an eye, I know of hell, I am living in it now , and this is where I shall be until I too die, when I lost her, I lost absolutely everything that was good and beautiful in this world.

Remember folks : express your love often, never take tomorrow for granted, and be kind to others.

On the lighter side of life…

Everyone has coping methods when dealing with stress, life, illness, etc. Me I tend to build things and tinker a lot, people say I am creative, but to be honest I really don’t know if I am really creative or just a bumbling idiot who just happens to know a thing or two about wood and various metals . so okay maybe I do have some skills but I seldom acknowledge that.

Another thing I do is use humour, sometimes one liners or jokes, but mostly things that I find funny , for instance , every third sunday of each month the village church holds a service, yes I attend even though I am more spiritual than anything, I figure it can’t hurt and I am generally intrigued and interested by the true believers, I mean the ones who “feel” the spirit and cry or whoop it up in the isles, this fascinates me to no end, but what I do in church , other than observe others, is find a pew with an elderly man or woman sitting alone, I sit at the far end so as not to disturb their worship, then , when the time is right, Rip a Hippo ! (Pass gas/fart), it rumbles down the pew nice and loud, then I fake a startled look and stare right at the elderly person at the far end !….. okay so it’s a bit mean but it is funnier than hell to watch everyone try to maintain their composure , and I come away looking innocent as all hell while trying not to piss myself laughing. I have done this only once, you don’t wanna do it more than once or they will figure out who the gasser truly is, meanwhile my poor wife is shooting daggers out her eyes at me and looks mortified and our son is on the floor with his fist in his mouth trying not to laugh his piddly ass off, as the poor reverend tries in vain to carry on as normal.

My best stuff comes at the hospital though, thankfully the nurses and staff at the Cancer center are quite used to me now, I used humor to put them at ease when it comes to physical appearance , the first time my wife was in the hospital the poor staff on the first day didn’t know how to address me, are you the husband?? I I I mean wife?? oh hell are you her partner? ( this alone was amusing to me watching them squirm trying to identify me), so I replied I would be her hersband, or husband if it is easier for you , so that is what I am listed as at the hospital, her husband.

The following day when I went to visit my wife, I dressed up as cousin IT from the addams family and gave the nurses and staff a good laugh, and to show them that yes the whole situation the previous day neither offended or hurt me, and that it is okay to laugh at the situation, now the staff just call me by name, and I always make sure to have a corny joke to tell them , I figure the cancer ward has got to be a stressful place to work and I know it’s stressful for my wife to be there during chemo so I always try to cheer her and the staff up.

Speaking of hospitals , the cancer ward is on the third floor, so I like to head to the top floor 6th , then push all the buttons and jump off as everyone is piling on , then I run down the stairs take my ball cap off and put on some shades , beat the elevator to the next floor and stand in front of the door with my arms crossed, I do this on every floor, by the time the people get to the second floor they’re all like wtf!! and hammering on the elevator buttons , when it finally gets to the cafeteria in the basement, I am sitting in a chair no shades and wearing my ball cap , looking as innocent as can be .

I have also been known to toss random stuff in other people’s shopping carts, sure theres the old condoms in the elderly ladies shopping cart gag, but that’s pretty old, still funny but old, no I like to mess with vegetarians, I am a people watcher so it’s pretty easy to spot the vegetarians in the grocery store, they can usually be found grazing the organic isles and no meat of any kind in their carts, I have noticed that tofu bacon packaging is similar to regular bacon brands, both can have the bright blue markers or red or yellow etc, so I swap em out when the person isn’t looking, I’ll take their tofu and replace it with meat, then replace someones meat with the tofu and cause total chaos and mayhem at the tills .

It is pretty common for me to wear a sponge clown nose, when I am in the city, if I pull up beside another car I will stick on the nose and look at the car beside me and wave, it usually gets a laugh or s snicker from the passengers, and kids start pointing and carrying on, so I look away and take the nose off then look back at them with a puzzled look, they are usually perplexed so I look away again and put the nose back on and wave , smile and drive away .

I know it may seem childish or downright jerkish to some, but humour even at the expense of myself or others helps me cope with all the hurt and suffering of my wifes cancer, it often brightens another persons day just to see some silliness in an otherwise hectic day.

Here is a corny joke you can do with your friends or kids, it’s family friendly and so corny that you will get a laugh out of someone, simply proclaim loudly to who ever that you can breathe under water, then prove it by standing under a glass of water and take a deep breath, see you did breathe under water!

Guess that’s all for now , remember folks, express your love often, never take tomorrow for granted and be kind to others .

Guess what my new hobby is

So I spent a year watching people like Tim, Tickle,Popcorn Sutton, and Jim Tom on TV and was thinking jeez laweez that looks like fun! not running from the revenue man or the law, but What it is these colorful characters do, so I figured Id give it a whirl, since I dont yet have a functional "mechanical container" (Still),I am currently using the fermentation method.

anyway here is a easy recipe for some good home brew

Easy RUM

Two pounds of brown sugar per one gallon of water and one cup of honey for every ten gallon batch. Starting hydrometer reading of about 90. Do not exceed 100. Add 1 to 3 ozs of yeast per 10 gallons of mash.

Heat one fourth of your water to 120 or 130 degrees only hot enough to melt the sugar, then stir in your sugar and then the honey last. Pour it into your fermenter and finish filling with cool water to cool it down to 80 degrees. Take a hydrometer reading and adjust as needed. The add your yeast. 6 to 14 days to ferment.

I am pretty sure making moonshine is illegal here in Canada as well, however you Can buy beer, wine, and spirits making kits, and with all the required equipment build a decent still as well, so as long as its not sold and only used for personal use and brewed in batches of 2 to 10 gallon batches then theres not a lot the law can do about it.

I am working on a simple stove top still made from a pressure cooker and about 10 feet of 1/4 inch copper pipe, when I perfect it I will post pictures.

Anyway its late , have a good weekend folks

Relief and Guilt because of that…

Let me just get this out there, I am still very much broken inside, I still grieve hard over my wife’s passing, but I am functioning, I am doing what I must do in order to provide a safe loving home for our son, I know I must continue to live life as best as I can and never just quit (though I really want to just quit), I know I have work to finish in this life before I can join my wife in the next, and to be honest, yes I have provisions in both my living will and my final will on who Hammy would live with in the event of my demise, what stops me from ceasing to exist in this life? #1 Hammy does, I couldn’t do that to him, it would be very cruel and heartless of me to do such a thing, #2 My Wife wouldn’t want for me to just up and quit life, she would want me to go on living and be there to see my future grand kids, #3 my personal beliefs in God and the afterlife stop me from doing anything profoundly stupid that would possibly hinder if not prevent me being with my wife in the next plane of existence, ( and no I don’t believe in the old hell fire and brimstone, that’s just crap created by man to scare people into getting their asses saved by God before they die…. it’s Hokum!)

Okay so having said that, I want to tell you a bit of my last year with my wife, to say it was stressful is a drastic understatement , it was a year filled with stress, worry, panic, sorrow, prayer, fear, anger(anger that she was stricken with Cancer, not anger at her), it was a year where I almost lost my wife many times, it was a year filled with 8 rounds of Chemo that required a 1 week hospital stay each round, it was during those times she almost died, it was a year of very little sleep as I was looking after my wife 24/7, Everyone including our son to a back seat in order of importance, friends family it didn’t matter, nobody was as important as my wife, myself included, financially I took a HUGE hit, our son (just 13) ran my business as I didn’t have the time, I was spending $500+ per month just in gasoline getting her to Doctors and to the Hospital, another $400 a month easily on drugs that were not covered under our Canadian Health Care system , another $350 or so per month just on her special diets ( Boost or Ensure drinks are $13.99 for a six pack) and so much more, my entire world revolved around her and keeping her alive and with us for as long as possible.

that was my life and so much more from December 2013 through to January 26 2015, Now ontop of my grief, I also carry so much guilt, guilt over pretty much abandoning our son, yes I fed him and made sure he had everything he needed, I told him I loved him but never truly gave him what he needed most….. Time, for a year he was pushed aside while I focused on my wife, I am just now beginning to really get to know my son, all I have now is Time so I focus it all on him.

I feel guilt for pushing all our friends back and family too, I’d rarely talk to any of them unless they phoned and my wifes side of the family harbors deep resentment towards me for that because I didn’t keep them updated on her as often as I perhaps should of.

I feel a deep sense of guilt because I feel relieved that it is all over, it’s hard to explain, I feel relief because now I have time for myself and others, to try and repair the damage I have done from pushing people back, I feel relief because financially I am slowly recovering ( I borrowed a shit ton of money of the course of the last year to make sure my wife had everything she needed, to keep my car running etc.) I am finally able to pay off those loans 1 or 2 at a time, with each debt that is paid I feel relief.

I feel guilt because I am slowly starting to live again, not simply exist, I feel guilt because I am relieved that all the stress and worry and fear are gone, I feel guilty for feeling relieved, and that guilt makes my grief so much harder to bare.

I have guilt because there are days (though few and far between) where I indulge in a laugh and a smile, and I have brief moments of happiness and contentment, I feel guilty for that, I still grieve hard and to be honest, I cry every night as I lay in bed, the same bed I have shared with my wife for the last 18 years, it’s now so cold and empty, I miss my wife so very much and can’t remember the happy times without shedding tears.

It’s hard on me when I am grocery shopping and in malls, I’ve never done either without her at my side, I see families together and it hurts me deep, I have to duck down an empty isle to dry my tears, I have difficulty driving alone as well, the 30 odd miles to the city may as well be 3000 miles, the drive seems longer now and it is certainly much lonelier, there’s no one to enjoy the scenery and nature with anymore.

I feel guilt because I am alive and cancer free ( I am a smoker) and she is no longer alive and died of a rare form of lung cancer, and she never smoked a day in her life, I have never smoked in the house or car or anywhere around non smokers, I feel guilty because it should have been me , not her!

Anyway, that’s all I have to say for tonight so remember folks : express your love often, never take tomorrow for granted, and be kind to others.
