My Wife seems to be doing good …for now

My Wife has been feeling a bit better, at the moment she is not bed ridden, she has been able to be up and move around the house, she is able to breathe on her own without oxygen for extended periods of time (6 hours so far), she felt well enough to cook supper tonight.

And what a supper it was! German sausages, beer battered onion rings, a veggie medley smothered in melted cheese and freshly baked homemade butter buns! My Wife can Cook! oh how I have missed her cooking, I have been the chief cook and bottle washer for the last 4 months, it sure was nice to taste her wonderful cooking again, I really porked out too, I am a meatasaurus, I crave meat, all types of meat, but one of my particular favorites just happens to be my wifes german sausage, I confess I eat it by the pound! I have a thing for veggies too, especially veggies smothered in melted cheese!

Now my wife isn’t cured of her cancer , nor sadly will she be, but she is doing remarkably well, I am amazed at how well she manages her day considering she is on quite the drug cocktail to keep her pain free, she takes Oxycodone twice a day, Morphine three times a day and valium three times a day, that’s just her pain management regime, she also has to take a stool softener, a laxative (because the pain pills block her up) an anti nausea medication and a needle full of Fragmin ( a blood thinner) daily.

How she is even conscious during the day is beyond me! never mind the fact that she gets up and can walk a straight line and make a meal fit for a king .

She is having issues with her potassium levels though, they are too high so she will be getting even more medication to combat that as the levels she has put her at risk for renal failure or a heart attack, this is a side effect of the type of lung cancer she has, it’s rare and called Synovial Sarcoma, it’s usually found in the limbs and rarely in the organs.

She has to be very careful of what veggies she eats as well as what fruits, potassium is her enemy right now, I never was one to watch labels at the grocery store, but now that my wife has become ill I have started reading labels very closely, which means I don’t always get to eat stuff I love, but it’s a small sacrifice if it means keeping my wife alive and well.

Today was a pleasant day, we (wife and I) spent a couple hours sitting at our picnic table enjoying the sun and watching the birds, she likes Robins and Starlings and Tree Swallows, 3 species we have plenty of out here on our little piece of paradise on the prairies.

well it is almost 10:30pm here, I will stop here for tonight, peace be with you all, remember to express your love often and never take tomorrow for granted .

Car Show for a good cause

So yesterday our little village (507 people), kicked off the very successful first annual Celebration of Life Day, to honor my wife and her battle with stage 4 lung cancer, the whole event is a huge fund raiser for her , to help medical expenses, gasoline for the car, etc and for what ever she wants to use the money for.

One of the events was a Car Show/show and shine , I took some photo’s to show you what some Canadian Country folks can do with cars, some of the cars were simply amazing!

This is my Beautiful wife (the Queen for a day) standing beside a Model T Ford , she really liked this car, she was able to walk around and talk to people for almost 2 hours without the use of an oxygen tank! She was really overwhelmed by the community support and was left speechless a few times.

This Beauty is a 1956 Chev , restored to completely original and stock, I rather like this car and could easily see myself cruising around in it , if only I had that kind of money!

This little mini bucket is not actually a Ford model T at all, we have some very creative folks in our community, this is a street legal home built from scratch lady owned micro rod, the engine is actually a 900 cc Kawasaki motorcycle engine, the front wheels are actually motorbike wheels, the back wheels are 13 inch from a chevy sprint (car) the bucket (where you sit) is a single seater and it is actually made from a wheel barrow… No Lie!! I didn’t believe it either at first until I talked to the owners husband (he helped her build this), it is an amazing little car, and will do an easy 140mph down the highway, and yes it is chain driven and has the 6 speed motorcycle transmission.

My Beautiful wife standing beside my friend Harvey’s Isetta, this is a cute little 3 wheeled car and the only one in Saskatchewan, my friend puts it on a trailer and pulls it behind his motorhome where he uses this little car to scoot around the campgrounds and to run errands.

This is our son “Hammy” sitting in a chevy S-10 truck, why did I take a photo of this truck? well the photo didn’t turn out as I had hoped, the paint work on this truck is extremely beautiful, it looks black but is infact many multiple colors and it shimmers in the sun and seems to change colors before your eyes, it also sports a 327 corvette engine and suspension, I am told it is “wicked” fast .

These are just a few of the over 50 cars and trucks that arrived for the car show, the cars came from all over Saskatchewan to show support for my wife, there are many events happening in our village, there was a softball tourney , an extreme road hockey event, car show, parade, a live concert and the band Prospekt donated their time for free, a casino and beer gardens, there are lots of kid sports and events happening as well and lots of family activities , they are capping it off tonight at 10pm with fireworks, all this to celebrate my wife and to celebrate life, all the proceeds from todays events go to my wife. We ourselves just found out about all this and what it was about less than 2 weeks ago, this is overwhelming to us to say the least, my wife was reduced to tears of happiness and gratefulness many times today, and I confess even I the emotional rock of my family got choked up a few times as I talked with people.

Guess that’s about all for now, I’ll post more photo’s in the next blog, and probably continue to do so for a few more blog posts as there are over 100 photos of todays events.

Remember to express your love often, never take tomorrow for granted and be kind to others , Peace

Spring where art thou

Well the darn ground hogs are wrong ! Spring has not sprung at all, in fact we here in Saskatchewan (Canada) are being nailed with the worst winter storm on record.

The Trans Canada Highway between Moose Jaw and Regina (you can Google these locations) has been closed for the last 48 hours, and there is a Canadian Pacific Railway freight train stuck on the tracks near Belle Plaine (Google this as well) the heavy snow fall has brought the train to a dead stop, the snow is just too deep for the train to plow through.

Here is a few photos of our yard just to give you an idea on just how deep the snow is here in Saskatchewan.

This is the new shed that I built last summer, I wont be getting into it til around mid april by the looks of it.

This is the east corner of our back yard, the dog house is all but buried, that post sticking out is actually the chimney stack of an out door fire place that is about 6 feet tall, that blue tarp in the back ground is the roof of our camper, the snow is between 5 feet and 7 feet deep in spots back there.

This is my wife, son, and dog just in front of the car, the snow bank beside the car is well over 5 feet in height

This is our house, there is a coral fence buried under there , and a couple 5 foot diameter wagon wheels attached to the fence that are all but buried.

This is a street view, of what the entire village looks like

So I ask , Spring , Spring< where art thou Spring!? it would seem that spring has completely forsaken us this year, which seriously makes me question Global Warming, it sure isnt warm here! in fact it has been colder this winter than the last 5 winters put together.

I will have lots of flood pictures to post once this snow finally does melt, the whole village is going to be swamped as are all the fields and roads surrounding it.

Guess thats all for now, for those who actually have spring, truly enjoy it, & for those of you that are like us, still snow bound, stay warm.

Another good Christmas

So Christmas is over for another year, all in all I have nothing to complain about, our son “Hammy” got me a new cordless drill which I needed really bad as my old one was plum wore out from years of hard and abusive use ( it has been dropped from various heights many times) ,But now I have a nice shiny new one that has plenty of torque !!

I also got a fantastic new Hamilton Beach Brew Station (Coffee maker) it’s digital and makes good coffee , it’s not a fancy thing like a Tassimo or Kureg , good thing too as I like the percolators, I like my 1 to 12 cups of coffee choices and the fact that it doesn’t cost me an arm and a leg for coffee , any brand will do, no over priced pods or K-cups !!

I got about a dozen pair of thick insulated socks and a thick new sweater so I’m all toasty warm when outside now, (trust me, every piece of clothing I wear in winter is insulated ) minus 55…. BRING IT ON!!

I made the MISTAKE of buying GTA 5 (Grand Theft Auto 5) for our son (he’s 13) …. good lord!! it’s not the violence (it’s only a game) it’s the language! I thought Mafia 1 and 2 were bad, but GTA every second word is an F bomb and that’s just the nicer words! DON”T BUY THIS GAME FOR YOUR KIDS …. unless you put head phones on them or make them play it on MUTE!

I’m going to talk him into trading that game for 2 others of his choice, I’m sorry I’m not old fashioned and I do know kids both hear and say that kind of language, but it is MY own opinion that only uneducated trash use that kind of language, people with the IQ of a Neanderthal drop a constant stream of F bombs in their sentences, there is no real need for constant profanity…. just MY opinion.

My wife got a ton of new small kitchen appliances, which she loves (though I will probably get more use out of them) and she too got quite a few insulated socks and clothes, though this winter so far hasn’t really been all that cold, (averaging about minus 10 so far),but she is prepared for when it does drop down to minus 55!

My little sister and my nephew came out for Christmas dinner ,I didn’t realize just how big the turkey I bought was (17 kg = 40+lbs) frigging thing was huge! It just barely fit into our roaster but the lid wouldn’t fit, my wife made her famous potato salad ( she makes the absolute best) and there was sweet potato and fresh veggies and about a gallon of gravy, for desert we had eggnog pie and drank virgin mimosa’s, lots of love and laughter over the course of the dinner.

Yesterday we spent the day with my friend Wayne and his family, big family, 7 kids! We had a great visit and lots of laughs, of course there was lots of freshly home made pumpkin pie and ice cream involved, you can’t go to Wayne’s house without being fed, course that’s the general rule at my house too, it’s a country hospitality thang, you come to my house, prepare to eat, I’d take it as an insult if you didn’t share a meal with us or dive into my wife’s fresh baked goods.

Today I woke up all stuffed up, I caught a dang cold so now I will be spending the next 3 or 4 nights sleeping on the Futon in the living room until this cold goes away, last thing I want is to make my wife sick! Christmas was extra special this year as my wife was in good enough health and is able to be here to celebrate with us, believe me I thanked God for that many times, the things I used to take for granted I sure don’t anymore!

So I am using the family computer instead of my laptop, why? Because the desktop is much faster than my laptop, I bought the family a refurbished desktop from a store called PC Plus , it cost me $219 (230 with tax) it’s compact too, it is just a small box that sits right on top of the desk, I put the monitor on top of it, it’s about a 1 foot by 1 foot square box that’s about 6 inches tall, has a 2.8 gig cpu , a 500 gig hard drive and is maxed out at 16 gigs memory, has 2 USB ports on the front and 6 on the back, has a DVD player and a CD burner , now I just have to buy a decent set of speakers for it, the internal speakers are good, but I want mega sound from it. It’s running windows 7 which I prefer over windows 8.1 that my laptop uses.

My wife got me the coolest tool bag, it’s not big but surprisingly holds a lot of tools! It came with a couple screw drivers a hammer and pliers, but I filled it with the loose tools I keep around the house for home repair and there was even enough room to put the cordless drill and charger in it that our son “Hammy” got me. It’s my first tool bag, I usually use tool boxes, I have a big tool box in the pantry, one in both cars and 3 tool chests in my work shop as well as 5 or 6 tool boxes, I have tools out the wazoo !

Not just mechanic tools but wood working tools, a bench press drill table saw etc, the only saw I want or need now is a band saw, I use the scroll saw as a band saw except I can’t cut metal with it. I enjoy building things and tinkering, I have a 93 Ford Topaz that I spent the last 2 summers rebuilding the motor, it runs like a dream and the car looks like it just come off the factory floor, but I had no sooner got the motor done and the damn transmission went… so now I am toying with the idea of pulling the motor out and converting it into a generator to power the house when ever the power goes out…. it’s just an idea yet. I’ve spent almost a year looking for a transmission for it with no luck, so pulling the motor may be the only option, be a shame to see such a good body end up in the scrap yard, I could probably part it out first and make a few bucks, I’ll decide what to do with it come spring.

Anyway, I don’t know how often I will be online over the next few days, I will be catching a lot of ZZZZZZZ’s and trying to get rid of this cold, but I will be around to answer all the comments and read some of your blogs, so I am off for now to rest.

Remember folks: express your love often, never take tomorrow for granted, and be kind to others.

You have to take the bad with the good and not let life get you down

So basically , if it wasn’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all…. this is the story of my life so I have learned to always try to find something good in a bad situation.

For instance, our son had a brain tumor last year and had surgery to remove it, yep that’s pretty bad, but the good news is, he survived and one year later is almost back to 100% normal (what ever normal is)

This last February my wife was diagnosed with stage 4 (end stage) Lung Cancer, that’s really bad…. the good news is that it’s going on 8 months and she is still alive and doing remarkably well (the chemo has helped greatly)

After those 2 major life events you’d think anything and everything else would be irrelevant or just peanuts, normally I would agree and leave it at that. How ever life and time keeps marching on, problems arise in day to day living that present their own set of challenges.

For instance, Last month I obtained a 2006 chevy aveo that my wife dubbed “Ladybug” (I traded a big Butch van for this), I drove the new car for 2 weeks then the computer went wonky and the new car suddenly doesn’t run so well and has been getting repairs as time and finances allow over the last few weeks, The good news : my old car (a 91 cavalier) runs great and I have been able to stay on the road (good thing too cause we live 30 miles from the nearest city)

Yesterday I had to drive out to Dallas Valley (a kids camp) and pick up our son, no problem it’s only 200 kilometers round trip, now the grid road that leads to Dallas Valley from the highway was so rough and pot holed that it snapped my muffler right off the old car…good news, Today I bought a new muffler , bad news, it cost me $160.00 for the muffler, clamps and hangers, the good news…. my neighbor is going to help install the new muffler tomorrow free of charge .

Last week I did something stupid (read the Bone Head award post) , I lost my temper and destroyed my laptop , that was bad, my friend Cheryl came to the rescue and loaned me her old net book until I can scrape together the cash to buy another laptop, that is a good thing, at least I can Blog and get around the web slowly but hey it’s better than nothing, then today, my sister Bonnie phones me, she has a friend that owns a rent a center in the city, her friend can get me a refurbished laptop super cheap! so of course I jump on that, next Wednesday, I pick up my new laptop, and it only cost me $80 (yes you read that right)

It’s all a matter of perspective, no matter the adversity big or small, if you dwell on the negative aspects of said adversity then you will remain angry and unhappy and frustrated, I try to find the positive in every negative and always remind myself….it could be worse.

Yes there are days when I just want to say screw it, or to hell with life and all it’s miserable failings, but then I stop and think of all the crap and hardship that I have been through in my 47 years on earth (including my own Mother trying to kill me when I was just 2 years old) and I say to myself, I’ve made it this far, I can go further, lets wait and see what tomorrow brings.

I also stop and think, I live in North America , Canada to be specific, compared to the shit going down in the Middle East and over in the Ukraine , and the Ebola outbreak in Africa, I have it pretty easy over here, suddenly my problems don’t seem so huge and out of control.

Things happen beyond my control multiple times per day, month in and month out, instead of letting those things wear me down I look at them as adventures, life is an adventure, I can either roll with it, good or bad, or I can get stuck in a rut doomed to replay one bad thing after another and slowly let it drive me crazy.

Monty Python put out a song many many years ago called “Always look on the brighter side of life” I often hum it to myself just as a reminder that things are going to be okay, when I am really down I belt out the Monty Python’s “Lumber Jack” song at the top of my lungs, this serves 3 purposes, #1 it makes me feel better, #2 it makes my wife laugh hysterically, #3 it embarrasses the Hell out of our son “Hammy” because I can’t sing to save my life, I sounded like a wounded animal in heat when I sing !

I do suffer from Manic Depression, and yes I do take medication for it, Risperdone and Mirtazapine , but even when I am really down I just keep looking forward, I’ve tried to end my life a few times in the distant past, now I know my warning signs and I keep looking ahead , I keep a weathered eye on the horizon and look to see what tomorrow will bring, Do I have my depression under control, for the most part yes I do, I have learned that I can live and function with severe depression, I have learned to force myself to interact with people, especially when I am at my lowest, I have learned to tell others ( a close and trusted friend) when I am not doing so good, I have learned to tell myself, this is the depression talking, life truly isn’t that bad. I have learned to reach out and not just ask for help for myself but to try and help others in the process, I have learned not to let depression control my life. I have learned to blog and just put it out there as a form of therapy but perhaps it may help someone somewhere not feel so alone.

So I have learned to take the bad with the good, and to find the good in the bad, sometimes I have to really reach for the good, but it is in fact there just waiting to be found.

Guess that’s all for tonight folks, remember to express your love often, never take tomorrow for granted, and be kind to others.
