DIY wood pallet projects

Not everyone is handy with exact measurements, or handy at wood working, construction or even being able to read directions or instructions, how ever there are DIY projects that will make even the most novice seem like a wood working wizard, here are a few photos of what you can do with a couple wood pallets & some spare time! do you know that you can get wood pallets for free? its true, you can usually get as many as you want or need for zero dollars, you just need the truck or trailer and be willing to load them yourself, the cost of these projects is basically what ever the wood screws or nails cost, & time ( I use wood screws as they are way more durable than nails.

This is a patio/out door table made from wood pallets, just look at the photo and duplicate it, that simple, requires 2 wood pallets, 4 wood blocks (the end pieces of fence posts works,as do 2 or 3 2x4 pieces stuck together to make the blocks),wood screws,4 wheels/coasters (can be picked up at any hardware store or recycled from broken furniture) & paint or stain (any old paint or stain will do) thats all there is to it, paint/stain the pallets, screw the wheels on the bottom pallet, add the blocks (1 in each corner)add the top pallet, screw it down to the blocks and there you have it, bobs your uncle! a patio table,& a good conversation piece.

This is a pallet bench, take 2 pallets, cut them almost in half, pop the boards off, stick 1 half upright or on a slight angle through the other, screw them securely together, put the boards back on to form the seat and back rest, paint/stain it and youre pretty much done, just look at the photo for a visual reference, its easy to build, you can get even more creative and use bolts and washers to hold it together, there by making the back rest adjustable, its as good as any store bought bench, you can also cut the pallets smaller and make lounge chairs or lawn chairs (Adirondacks) why spend hundreds on them when you can basically get them free all you have to do is build them.

This is pretty straight forward, its a fence made of wood pallets, pretty much a no brainer, just screw them together side by side, you will need fence posts though, and if you search the local area you may be able to get these used and free if youre willing to remove them yourself, you can also use recycled 2x4s as fence posts, the fence posts are used to make the fence sturdy and rigid just as any other fence.

This is a bigger project, a shed or play house chicken coop or what ever you wish it to be made out of wood pallets, a standard 16x16 shed takes 100 pallets, you will have to build roof trusses (rafters) the walls can be left open or covered with any scrap siding or wood planking, metal etc. you can insulate this using scrap insulation or a couple old hay bales stuffed between the boards.

These are just a few things you can use free wooden pallets for, they can be cut and made into wooden walkways, pretty much anything really as they are quite versatile, they are even used to build emergency shelters mostly in flood ravaged countries, the possibilities are endless, and if youre handy with a saw you could actually build an entire livable house out of wood pallets.

Good luck and happy building

Dog Days Bonfires

Today was a rather busy day out here on the prairies, first I changed the front tire on our son "Hammy"s bike, then fixed my wifes bike, after that I went visiting awhile with my friend down the road apiece, that visit proved fruitful as he had an old lawnmower sittin out behind his shed, said if I could have it if I wanted, if not he was gonna send it to the dump,so me being kinda iffy about things going to the local landfill (Id rather recycle, reuse, re purpose things),I took the mower home, changed the spark plug, added gas, primed it with a shot of ether and it fired right up, got a good mower for free!!

The rest of the afternoon was spent building a dog house out of scrap wood & some left over shingles, this is the dogs new digs

Yep it is all painted, a bright yellow, the only color I had on hand,(also got the paint free from Sarcan recycling depot)the only new item on this dog house is the metal ring I bolted on the upper right corner, total investment into the dog house, is $2.78 for the metal ring.

it should be said that that bright yellow paint aint oil or latex, its actually enamel, when it dried it went solid like concrete, should stop any wood rot for years to come! took just 4 hours from start to finish (including paint) to construct the dog house, and wouldnt you know it, our dog doesnt like it!

After a casual day,& building the dog house, my wife decided that we should have a wiener roast, and our son "Hammy" was all for that as there was also marshmellows to be had! so I cleaned out the back yard fireplace, stacked some logs and poured about a cup full of gasoline over the wood and threw a match....gotta love that WHUMP and small mushroom ball of fire, it is the first bonfire of the season, many many more to come! best part is I didnt burn down the back yard !!

guess thats it for today, have a great weekend folks!
